Stepdad of boy who died after eating strawberries arrested for trafficking fentanyl
The stepfather of an eight-year-old boy who died earlier this month in Hopkins County has been booked into jail.33-year-old Antonio Person is charged with trafficking fentanyl, as well as other drug and gun possession charges.
Eight-year-old Trey Harris was laid to rest over the weekend.
His death sparked a warning about strawberries sold at a school fundraiser.
Initially, health officials worried there was something wrong with the strawberries, but then officials believed Trey had an allergic reaction.
The coroner says they are still waiting on toxicology results to determine Trey’s cause of death.
Police say the investigation into Trey’s death led to the search warrant, which led to the discovery of the drugs and gun in the home.
Major Jason McKnight with the Madisonville Police Department says he knows there’s a large public interest in this case.
However, they want to be clear that there have been no final conclusions drawn in the death of Trey Harris.
“I’m sure everybody’s aware that yesterday we did serve the search warrant and somebody was charged, and yes, fentanyl was found there,” explains McKnight, “But we’re not saying that has anything to do with this just yet.
As we said in the beginning, strawberries involved? Yes. Is that the main cause? We’re working on it. I can’t tell you that.
Is it an allergic reaction to the strawberries? We’re not sure. Could it be a reaction to a pesticide or dye on it? Possibly.
There’s a lot of variables here that we’re working on.”
McKnight says at this point, their logical step forward is to wait.
They’re still waiting on the tests done on the strawberries and the container they came in as well as the autopsy and toxicology reports for Trey.
At the end of the day, McKnight says he and his staff are putting all of rumors and speculation aside to ensure their focus is purely on finding out what happened.
“I really want to stress here that I understand the public’s interest with the strawberries and the possible fentanyl.
It really is kind of this extraordinary story as a whole, but the reality is a young boy’s lost his life because of it,” says McKnight, “we’re painfully aware in this building that the underlying issue here is that a child’s gone.
Everything else will present itself in time.”
Person is being held on an over $1 million bond in the Hopkins County Jail.
